A Little History
On behalf of all of us at Brice Station, the Quyle and Mast families, I want to thank you for supporting Shakespeare on the Vine Theatre Company.
We would like to pass on a little history of this property:
Durant Brice was a native New Yorker. As a boy he saw reassembled bark from the “Mother of the Forest” tree of the Calaveras Grove as a demonstration of the size of Giant Sequoias. He decided someday he would travel to California to see those trees.
In the meantime, Brice made his living as a New York Shakespearean actor and transcontinental travel was difficult.
Finally in 1914, nearly 50 years later, Brice found his way to see the Calaveras Big Trees, never returning to New York. He bought 160 acres, here, built a stagecoach stop and roadhouse across the street and established Brice Station.
The property was purchased in 1943 by Paul Sr. and Kitty Quyle, who gave Brice a life estate here. A decade later, Paul Jr. and Joyce Quyle built Quyle Kilns where it stands today.
Joyce Quyle remembered Brice in his nineties standing on the Murphys Park gazebo reciting Shakespeare and bringing half the crowd to tears. The crowd would call out roles and parts, and he would perform them with ease. He was a brilliant Shakespearean actor.
Now with Tara and Robbie’s dream manifested in 10 years of Shakespeare, we have come full circle on this property. With your support we will continue long into the future.
Thank you,
Dolores & Stuart Mast
