Director’s Program Note

“A poor player, that struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
and then is heard no more…”

Does conscience choice have control over our fate or are we pawns in the game of inevitability? This question is at the cornerstone of humanity; the dichotomy in that belief balances free will and decision-making every day. We don’t personify Fortune anymore, but she still guides us, either passively or by our ardent endeavor to control the outcomes of life.

Five years ago, I seized the opportunity to start a theatre company in the town I love, with the people I love, under the generous stewardship of a family I love at Brice Station Vineyards. We took a risk to enact our own destiny for this community. Since then, the community has seized the fate of Shakespeare on the Vine Theatre Company and my future when they did not shy away from the bold art made.

These questions of fate are at the heart of William Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth. Our title character is on the path of upward momentum in a battle-hardened world, but she and her husband fit a lifetime into days when the opportunity to commandeer Fortune comes. As fatal predictions loom over her castle, audiences should wonder: Are these consequences predetermined, or do the Macbeths have control over their fate?

This play has made me wonder what the future of Shakespeare on the Vine Theatre Company at Brice Station Vineyards will be. Together, we fueled endless possibilities and put into motion something unstoppable—something of passionate vision and daring drama—a company and community that demands excellence and annual shifts of perspective.

There are no witches helping to prophesize our future. Instead, we continue to rely on our vaulting ambition and your generous support to create compelling Shakespeare in the Sierra Nevada. We would be nothing but a few poor players strutting and fretting upon the stage without you.

Thank you for the unyielding support you’ve shown each season.

Sincerely,

Tara Kayton
